It takes a very special disposition to want to dedicate your life to raising crazy, wild, energetic boys into responsible men. It can be frustrating, tiring, even dangerous - and yet, John Bosco knew from a very young age that he wanted to do just that. He took poor, unemployed boys in, gave them a place to live and new perspectives. Thanks to him, they had goals, and a paycheck, and they learned how to support themselves and excel in life. Thanks to John Bosco, we have an example of what methods work with the youth - what manner of speaking touches their hearts and gives them a purpose. His 3 ingredients of success were Reason, Religion and Kindness - without which no lasting education can happen. He was a great motivator! He let boys be boys, and was often heard to say "Enjoy yourself as much as you like, but do not sin!" And what can perhaps be viewed as prophetic, he believed that all children can grow up into responsible adults, given a frame, given love, and given guideposts ... "If young people are educated properly, we have moral order; if not, vice and disorder prevail. Religion alone can initiate and achieve a true education." During the 1800`s, he took hundreds of boys off of the streets and made sure that they learned a proper trade. He and his mother took care of them all. Even today, his legacy lives on with houses all over the world run by the Salesian Society, of which he is the founder.
