Intro text
Christian woman, faithful wife, loving mother and dear friend Mattie Leigh Baldwin Corley was born March 21, 1946 in Morengo County AL to Tommie and Ruth Baldwin. She was the oldest of five children. Mattie attended and graduated from George P Austin High School in 1962 and was baptized at Hope Well Baptist Church. She moved to Norristown after graduation and worked for the Norristown State Hospital. Later she married Johnnie C of Greenwood NC and joined the Macedonia Baptist Church. The joy of Mattie’s life was the raising, teaching and nurturing of her three children of which she often said if she could do it all over again she would. As a member of Macedonia she served as a member of the Mass Choir and on the hospitality ministry joyfully welcoming all visitors to God’s house with passion and the Word. Mattie enjoyed her family and the joy of fellowship with her brothers and sisters in Christ. She especially loved her new members classes which she attended faithfully until completion. Mattie’s life was filled with the issues of life but none that ever stopped her from giving a smile, walking straight and tall, facing any challenges with dignity and trusting the Lord through it all. In April of 2010 she was diagnosed with cervical cancer and given 4 months to live. God in His tender mercy and divine plan kept her not just alive but living and working, serving and giving until two weeks before her death. And even now, the kindness that she had is still giving to so many. During times of intense pain and struggle, Mattie would often say, “I know who I am and I know who’s I am. He will never leave me nor forsake me.” Mattie is at rest, has no more struggles and no more pain. She is with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the one who is Faithful. Mattie will be dearly missed.
